Capturing the Miniature Beauty of Vancouver
Capturing the Miniature Beauty of Vancouver
In early 2019, while recovering from a skateboarding-induced broken wrist and missing out on the ski season, I turned my attention to another passion: photography. With Vancouver as my canvas, I embarked on a mission to capture its essence from every imaginable angle. Little did I know that this would mark the beginning of an extraordinary journey.
During this time, I stumbled upon the captivating technique of tilt shift photography. Intrigued by its potential, I decided to dive deeper into this creative realm. What began as a simple experiment soon evolved into an all-consuming obsession as I delved into the intricacies of creating miniature worlds through my lens.
As I ventured through Vancouver’s diverse landscapes, a profound realisation struck me. Each season brought forth its unique charm, painting the city in ever-changing hues and bathed in ethereal light. Motivated by this enchantment, I set out to craft a film that would not only capture the beauty of Vancouver but also convey the essence of time passing. The challenge lay in encapsulating the passage of an entire year into the span of a single day, a visual journey like no other.
As the project took shape, I enlisted the talents of composer Ed Riman, a fellow graduate of the renowned Brit School in London, to compose the film’s score. Additionally, I partnered with Gareth Wood, an experienced sound designer, to perfect the auditory experience. Together, we transformed an experiment into a captivating short film titled “Vantage.”
Our efforts paid off as “Vantage” gained recognition and was selected for multiple film festivals in Canada and the UK. The film’s unique approach to showcasing Vancouver’s charm in miniature form resonated with audiences, drawing attention to the everyday beauty that surrounds us.
Creating “Vantage” was an exhilarating journey, combining my passion for photography with the magic of tilt shift. Through this film, I aimed to share the awe-inspiring beauty of Vancouver, capturing the essence of its seasons and the diverse palette of colours that paint the city. I hope “Vantage” continues to inspire others to explore their creative endeavours and appreciate the unique perspectives found in everyday life.
